2:47Now Playing“Prime” host Charles Blow’s book “The Devil You Know” opens with an interview detailing Timuel Black’s account of the Great Migration, just days shy of his 100th birthday.
Blow spoke to the former civil rights leader about his experiences in that transformative period, which saw millions of African Americans in the South seek refuge and opportunity in the North. Throughout his century of living, Black held titles as an educator, humanitarian, activist, veteran and author. He marched with Dr. King, campaigned for the election of Chicago’s first Black mayor and even served as mentor to Barack Obama.
In every way, Black maximized each advantage Chicago’s South Side afforded him. The life and legacy of Black, who passed away Wednesday night at the age of 102, is now being celebrated for the culture.
