3:45Now PlayingPeople with sickle cell disease certainly face many challenges, but the toll it takes on families is rarely discussed. BNC’s Anita Bennett talks to Dr. Carolyn Rowley, who founded Cayenne Medical Center in an effort to offer support services to individuals with sickle cell. Whether patients need transportation to their clinic appointments, rental assistance or help with utilities, the non-profit has resources in place to help. In the US, 100,000 people have the disease, and most of them are Black. The only cure is through a blood or bone marrow transplant. Patient advocate Adrienne Shapiro, who works with the medical center, says the disease is also hard on families, especially mothers who may have lost a child from it.
