2:30Now PlayingFor over 40 years after the Masters Tournament was created, not a single Black golfer was allowed to play at Augusta National Golf Course until Lee Elder broke that color barrier in 1975.
He was the first Black golfer to play in the coveted Masters and was also among the first professional golfers to break through on the major circuit.
His accomplishment served as inspiration for a generation of Black golfers who would follow, including Tiger Woods. Twenty-two years after his own Augusta debut, Elder returned to witness Woods become the first Black golfer to win the Masters.
