The “Empire” star faces felony disorderly conduct charges over an allegedly fabricated attack in January 2019. According to court documents, Smollett knowingly made false claims to law enforcement about being a victim of a homophobic and racially motivated assault.
The prosecution opened the trial charging that Smollett’s actions were not just criminal, but despicable and “denigrated victims of actual hate crimes.”
