Dec 8, 20212:39Now PlayingOn this day in 1941, Petty Officer 2nd Class Doris Miller, the grandson of enslaved Black people and son of sharecroppers, etched his name in American history.
Miller was preparing breakfast and sorting laundry when his battleship, USS West Virginia, was hit by two bombs and up to nine torpedoes.
Blacks at the time were not allowed to operate any weaponry, but Miller sprang into action.
He would famously man a machine gun to ward off opposing forces and later helped wounded shipmen to safety.
Miller became the symbol of patriotism and a rallying cry for desegregation of the U.S. armed forces.
