The state’s Republican-led General Assembly has passed bills that have substantially impacted local election boards by restructuring them or in some cases eliminating them.
Voting and civil rights activists argue that such closures would make casting a ballot nearly impossible for many Black voters who live as far as 20 miles away from the lone polling station in a county that lacks reliable public transportation.
Without legislation on the federal level, voting rights will be at the whim of state legislatures. This set of circumstances has seemingly played into the Republicans’ quest to retain power.
