This Amendment, the "Second Founding" of our America's promise, was also known as Freedom Day.
A man born into slavery, Major Richard R. Wright Sr., served as the first President of the HBCU Savannah State University and launched the effort to pin February 1 as Freedom Day.
Wright's lobbying campaign included a national speaking tour during which he would pressure legislators to consider his proposal.
On January 25, 1949, President Harry Truman signed a bill proclaiming February 1 as Freedom Day.
