YouTube Description
as posted by the channelWilliam Whiteley was known as the Universal Provider, the man who built one of the greatest retail empires in Victorian London from nothing but seven pounds and a third class railway ticket. By the time he was done, he owned whole blocks of Bayswater, employed six thousand people, and had earned comparisons to the greatest capitalists in the world. But behind the empire was a man who cheated on his wife repeatedly, kept two sisters as mistresses simultaneously, fathered secret illegitimate sons he refused to acknowledge, and paid hush money to a string of female employees to keep his dirty secrets buried. In January of 1907, one of those secrets walked into his shop on Westbourne Grove and shot him dead.
This is not the story of a curious and troubling case. This is the full, scandalous, and documented truth about William Whiteley, the affairs that destroyed his family, the illegitimate son Horace George Rayner who pulled the trigger, and the retail empire that collapsed into a crime scene before Harry Selfridge took it over. If you have already heard the basics of this story and you are ready for everything they left out, you are in the right place.
It's another Hot Mess History scandal. Enjoy!
