Woman Arrested for DWI After Striking Car with Pregnant Woman

SECOND DWI Arrest

Around 8:27 PM on May 17, 2022, officers with the East Brunswick Police Department were called to the scene of a motor vehicle accident involving a 2015 Subaru and 2021 Subaru on Highway 18 South near Eggers Street. As the officer arrived on scene, he was informed that a woman driving a 2015 Subaru had struck a 2021 Subaru in a rear-end collision. The passenger in the 2021 Subaru was pregnant and 2 weeks away from giving birth. Witnesses had stopped at the scene to tell the officers what happened, and first responders arrived on scene to evaluate the pregnant woman. The officer made contact with the driver, identified as Sasha, and asked her to explain what happened.

Sasha initially denied consuming alcohol or any other substances that could cause impairment. However, she would later admit to being under the influence of a prohibited substance. Based on his suspicion of impairment, Patrolman Dougherty began by administering field sobriety exercises. He started with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus, and the results indicated a likelihood of impairment. He even observed vertical nystagmus, indicating a high level of impairment. After the HGN test, he attempted to administer the Walk and Turn test, but ultimately decided to terminate the test for safety reasons because Sasha displayed a lack of balance.

Based on the traffic accident, her admission to consuming a prohibited substance, and her inability to adequately complete the field sobriety exercises, Sasha was placed under arrest for driving under the influence. Her vehicle was searched and impounded for a mandatory 12-hour hold under John’s Law. Patrolman Thuring placed Sasha in handcuffs and transported her to the East Brunswick Police Department for initial processing.

She was issued the following traffic summonses: Operating under the influence, reckless driving, careless driving, failure to possess driver registration, failure to possess driver insurance card, and failure to possess driver license

Sasha was also charged with Assault by Auto under N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1C(2). Court records indicate that this charge was disposed of in Superior Court on August 21, 2023. However, court records indicate that Sasha was arrested for DWI again in Bound Brook, New Jersey on October 23, 2022.

Super. 13, the Appellate Division of the Superior Court has also affirmed the right to film law enforcement interactions.
