Drunk Woman TOTALS BMW After Crashing into a Tree at DOUBLE the Legal Limit

On October 16, 2023 around 12:58 AM, Patrolman Javier Maldonado with the Scotch Plains Police Department responded to a motor vehicle collision involving a 2019 BMW 430 on Sunnyfield Lane. When he arrived on scene, he noticed that the car had driven past the curb on the homeowner’s driveway and crashed into a tree surrounded by shrubs. There was airbag deployment inside the vehicle and the BMW had sustained severe front-end damages. The driver would later be identified as Extania. With the help of Patrolman Willie DeJesus, Extania was able to exit the vehicle through the passenger side door.

First responders arrived on scene and placed Extania on a stretcher so she could go into the ambulance rig and be evaluated. While she was being placed on the stretcher, Patrolman Maldonado detected the odor of alcohol and observed other indicators of impairment. After she was evaluated by first responders, she declined transport to the hospital. When Extania was asked if she had anything to drink, she admitted to consuming alcohol earlier that evening. After the first responders evaluated her, the Patrolman Maldonado asked her to perform field sobriety exercises based on his suspicion of impairment.

Patrolman Maldonado started with the Walk and Turn test. During the Walk and Turn test, Extania did not touch heel-to toe on each step and initially did not count her steps aloud. The final exercise was the One Leg Stand test. During the One Leg Stand test, Extania failed to raise her foot in the proper fashion and failed to count in the correct sequence. The Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test was not administered.

Based on the motor vehicle accident, the odor of alcohol, and her inability to perform the field sobriety exercises satisfactorily, Extania was placed under arrest for operating under the influence. Her vehicle was impounded by for a mandatory 12-hour hold under John’s Law. Patrolman Maldonado placed her in handcuffs and initially transported her to the Fanwood Police Department where she was searched by a female officer.

At the Fanwood Police Department, the Standard Statement for Motor Vehicle Operators was read to her and she agreed to submit breath samples for testing. Her Alcotest results indicated a BAC level of 0.16%, which was double the legal limit of 0.08%. Once they finished processing her, Extania was transported back to the Scotch Plains Police Department for further processing. She was eventually released to her brother pending her court appearance after he signed the Potential Liability Warning form on Extania’s behalf. Patrolman Maldonado issued her summonses for operating under the influence, reckless driving, careless driving, and careless driving: operate m.v. causing property damage
