38:08Now PlayingAround 3:35 AM on January 13, 2024, Officer Keith Brown with the Tampa Police Department observed a 2017 Jeep being driven at about 75 MPH in a 55 MPH zone on Interstate 275 southbound. He activated his lights to initiate a traffic stop, and the driver pulled over on the shoulder. The officer made contact with the driver, who was identified as 23-year-old Mya Murdock.
As he was speaking with her, he observed indicators of impairment and detected the odor of alcohol. She told the officer that she had picked up her passenger from SoHo and that they were heading home. Mya denied drinking too much, but Officer Scott Van Treese was called to the scene to administer field sobriety exercises. Officer Van Treese arrived on scene around 3:44 AM. Mya was asked to exit the vehicle and perform field sobriety exercises.
Officer Van Treese started with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. He then drove her over to a Walmart gas station to perform the other field sobriety exercises. The second exercise was the Walk and Turn test. During the Walk and Turn test, Mya did not touch heel-to-toe on each step and turned improperly. The third exercise was the One Leg Stand test, and Mya failed to raise her foot in the proper fashion.
Based on her excessive speeding, her indicators of impairment, her admission to consuming alcohol, and her inability to adequately perform the field sobriety exercises, Mya was placed under arrest for driving under the influence. Mya was transported by Officer Van Treese to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office for further processing. Her BAC results were 0.223 and 0.205, respectively. She was charged with a DUI (316.193(4)) and released pending her court appearance after posting bond.
