Drunk Woman Crashes her Car Up a Hill

On April 8, 2025 around 6:16 PM, Officer David Giraldo with the Mount Olive Police Department was dispatched to the scene of a motor vehicle accident on Routh 206 South in the vicinity of Oakwood Drive South. He arrived on scene around 6:20 PM and noticed that a white 2014 Toyota Rav4 had crashed into a wooded area after it was driven up a hill. There was airbag deployment inside the vehicle, and the vehicle had sustained severe exterior damages.

He made contact with the driver of the Toyota, Gasparina Izzolo, who was seated inside a vehicle that was driven by another woman who followed her car and witnessed the crash. Gasparina told Officer Giraldo that she was coming from a restaurant after celebrating a friend’s birthday. She would later admit to consuming 1 drink at the restaurant. Based on his suspicion of impairment, Gasparina was asked to exit the vehicle and perform field sobriety exercises after Corporal Chad Rossy arrived on scene to assist.

The first exercise was the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. During the HGN test, Corporal Rossy observed 4/6 indicators of impairment. The second exercise was the Walk and Turn test. The final exercise was the One Leg Stand test.

Based on the motor vehicle crash, her admission to consuming alcohol earlier that day, and her inability to satisfactorily complete all the field sobriety exercises, Officer Giraldo placed Gasparina under arrest for driving under the influence. The vehicle was impounded for a mandatory 12-hour hold under John’s Law.

Officer Smith transported Gasparina to the Mount Olive Police Department for further processing. At the Mount Olive Police Department, Gasparina was read the Standard Statement for Motor Vehicle Operators, and she agreed to submit breath samples. Her Alcotest results indicated a BAC level of 0.04%. After the officers finished processing her, she was eventually released pending her court appearance.

Officer Giraldo issued her the following citations:

-Operating under the influence (39:4-50)

-Reckless driving (39:4-96)

-Traffic on marked lanes (39:4-88)

Court records indicate that on May 27, 2025, Gasparina was found not guilty of operating under the influence. She pleaded guilty to traffic on marked lanes while her reckless driving citation was amended to careless diving (39:4-97) as part of a plea agreement. As a result of her convictions, Gasparina had to pay a total of $430 in fines.
