1:02Now PlayingHawaii News Now’s Keahi Tucker: House republicans today passed a $1.5 trillion tax plan. The measure slashes the corporate tax rate, simplifies the tax code, and doubles the standard deduction. Thirteen Republicans and all the Democrats voted against it, including Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard.
Tulsi Gabbard: “It also takes away the major medical expense deduction that right now about 35,000 people in Hawaii take advantage of. Predominantly they are our kupuna. A lot of our public school teachers shell out hundreds of dollars every year of their own money buying supplies for their students. This bill completely gets rid of the deduction that they have had up until now, further driving down their take home pay.”
Hawaii News Now’s Keahi Tucker: Gabbard says some incentives for clean energy would also be eliminated. The Senate still has to approve its own different version. One big feature of both versions is that they would slash the 35% corporate tax to 20%.
