Tulsi Gabbard Introduces Legislation to End Congressional Hush Fund

Marissa Yamane of KHON: Meanwhile on Capitol Hill, Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard has introduced a measure that would prohibit the use of taxpayer dollars to settle sexual misconduct claims against members of Congress. Since 1990, the government says it's paid out more than 17-million dollars to settle claims against congress members. but its unclear how much of that money was related to sexual assault or sexual harrassment allegations. What's also unclear is who's accused of misconduct, since those names are kept confidential. Through her bill, Gabbard wants to make them public.

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard: For too long survivors of sexual harassment and assault have been isolated, shamed and bullied into silence while their abusers walk away scot-free, with the privilege of anonymity and with no personal or financial accountability.

Marisa Yamane of KHON: if passed, Gabbard's measure would require those accused of sexual misconduct to repay the government for any settlements that used taxpayer dollars.
