Rep. Bradley Byrne, R-Ala., argued against the articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump during the day-long debate ahead of a full House vote on Dec. 18. He suggested that Democrats were holding the impeachment vote before Christmas "because the Democrat majority believes getting impeachment done now will provide their vulnerable members time to distance themselves from their vote." He criticized his Democratic colleagues, saying their goal was “impeachment, as fast as possible.” The two articles charge Trump with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. “This majority has assembled hearsay, speculation and presumptions for the purpose of overturning the 2016 election,” Byrne claimed. If the articles are passed, the process will then head for a trial in the Senate, where Republicans have a majority.
