During the planned six hours of debate ahead of the House impeachment vote on Dec. 18, Rep. John Rutherford, R-Fla., said Russia interfered in the U.S. 2016 presidential election with the goal of sowing discord and division in the United States. "Somewhere in Russia right now, [Russian President Vladimir] Putin is laughing at us today," Rutherford, placing the blame on Democrats for pursuing the impeachment inquiry, claimed they were "carrying out the wishes of the Kremlin." President Donald Trump was charged with two articles of impeachment--abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. If passed, the process will then head for a trial in the Senate, where Republicans have a majority. Earlier in the day, the House voted to approve rules for the vote.
