Sen. Tom Carper, D-Del., outlined his reasons on Feb. 4 for his anticipated vote to convict President Donald Trump on two articles of impeachment and remove him from office. During a speech on the Senate floor, Carper said a vote to acquit realizes the founder’s worst fears and “effectively legalizes the corruption of our election, the very foundation of our democratic process.”
The Senate speeches come one day before the Senate will decide whether to convict or acquit Trump on two articles of impeachment — abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. After the Senate voted last week to bar new witness testimony and subpoenas for documents, Trump’s acquittal has seemed all but assured. The House of Representatives impeached Trump in December.
