Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., said President Donald Trump violated the law by withholding U.S. aid to Ukraine in an effort to pressure the country to announce an investigation into his political rivals. “We’ve got to really ask ourselves, ‘How can this president deal with any foreign nation after compromising himself in such a fashion? How can he be trusted to ensure that American elections are free and fair?” Feinstein said in a speech explaining why she will vote to convict Trump on two articles of impeachment.
Senators weighed in for a second day on Feb. 4 on how they will vote when it comes to removing Trump from office. The speeches come one day before the Senate will decide whether to convict or acquit Trump on the two articles of impeachment--abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. After the Senate voted last week to bar new witness testimony and subpoenas for documents, Trump’s acquittal has seemed all but assured. The House of Representatives impeached Trump in December.
