Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., said in a speech on the Senate floor that President Donald Trump’s misconduct alleged in the articles of impeachment is “appalling” but “no surprise.” Kaine warned that “unchallenged evil spreads like a virus. We have allowed a toxic resident to infect the Senate and warp its behavior.” While Kaine said he will vote to convict Trump, removing him from office would not solve the problem. “Everyday people of goodwill must engage as never before and show to ourselves and to the world that Americans still have the capacity to choose right over wrong,” Kaine said.
On Feb. 4, Senators weighed in for the second day on how they will vote on whether to remove Trump from office. The speeches come one day before the Senate will decide whether to convict or acquit Trump on two articles of impeachment — abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. After the Senate voted last week to bar new witness testimony and subpoenas for documents, Trump’s acquittal has seemed all but assured. The House of Representatives impeached Trump in December.
