5:48Now PlayingChina is the “most potent and dangerous” nation the U.S. has faced in its history, Sen. Marco Rubio said during his confirmation hearing for secretary of state on Wednesday.
“They have elements that the Soviet Union never possessed. They are a technological adversary and competitor, an industrial competitor and economic competitor, geopolitical competitor, a scientific competitor now in every realm,” Rubio said.
Responding to questioning from Sen. Pete Ricketts, R-Neb., about why China should be a top priority, Rubio added that if the U.S. doesn't change course, "virtually everything that matters to us in life will depend on whether China will allow us to have it or not."
Rubio, the senior senator from Florida, was a one-time Republican presidential hopeful who ran against President-elect Donald Trump. A former member of the Senate panel holding his confirmation hearing, Rubio also serves on the Select Committee on Intelligence.
