as posted by the channelSen. Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii, questioned U.S. attorney general nominee Pam Bondi in a confirmation hearing Wednesday held by the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Hirono joined the Democratic chorus of concerns over Bondi ensuring the White House doesn’t play a role in the Justice Department’s investigative or prosecutorial decisions.
“It’s really important to us that the attorney general be independent of the White House and you have a president-elect who considers the AG’s office his law firm,” Hirono said.
Hirono posed to Bondi that if Trump suggested or asked her to investigate one of his political enemies, what would she do?
Bondi said she hasn’t heard Trump say something like that, “but what I will tell you is two-thirds of Americans have lost faith” in the Justice Department. Through crosstalk, Bondi said she’d restore integrity to the agency.
Bondi is a former Florida attorney general and has been a longtime ally of President-elect Donald Trump. This is the first of two hearings the committee has scheduled for the nominee.
