In this week's debate, Biden insisted that “if you cross the border illegally, you should be able to be sent back. It is a crime.” Huerta criticizes Biden for criminalizing border crossers, many of whom are asylum seekers fleeing from violence in their countries of origin. “It is a great disappointment to hear Vice President Biden use that kind of language because he is speaking just like the Republicans,” Huerta says. “We have had an amnesty program in the United States from the time this country was formed by immigrants. People seem to forget that.”
