TRANSCRIPT
The ACC commission has rejected a $25 million grant concept to improve safety along North Avenue. They did that because they didn’t want a roundabout or a road diet down to four lanes, despite the safety benefits.
Commissioner Ovita Thornton led the charge in rejecting this grant concept.
“Let them take the money back. We keep selling our soul to the Devil because of money.”
Commissioner Jesse Houle was the only commissioner to support the safety improvements, citing the number of people injured or killed on this road in the last five years.
“Almost two-hundred people have had their lives ended or ruined by the current design of this corridor. I don’t feel I can in good conscience support a five-lane option moving forward.”
Without a roundabout or road diet, the concept may no longer meet the minimum requirements for the grant.
