A group of concerned residents spoke at city hall on Tuesday about the water crisis in the Pinewoods community off US-29.
“The families there do not have reliable access to clean water. They don’t know if they will lose water for hours at a time or on what days.”
“Pinewoods is a community of hardworking, taxpaying families but they are facing a severe public health crisis. My neighbors lack clean water for the most basic human needs. Things like cooking, bathing their children, washing their clothes. This is not merely an inconvenience. This is a public safety hazard.”
“I was a Peace Corps volunteer in rural Guatemala for almost three years. My principal work was on clean water. To think that my neighbors two miles up the road are living in that in 2025 in Athens, Georgia! That’s something that we shouldn’t stand for.”
“I stand before you today urgently requesting that this commission take responsibility and act immediately to guarantee the right to clean water for every resident of Athens-Clarke County.”
‘I don’t think that access to clean water should be a privilege, but that’s where we are right now. And I’m not here to yell or get angry, I’m only here to ask for help and I want us to work together to figure out a solution to this. I want to figure out a way to connect the residents in Pinewoods to the city water supply. It’s 2025 and everyone deserves access to clean water every day.”
