Valerie Singleton and Brian Widlake announce The Money Programme's most ambitious feature to date: Futurehome 2000.
With energy prices soaring, the need for our homes to be as energy efficient as possible is clear. It's one thing to install insulation and double glazing to an old house, but just how energy efficient can a house theoretically be? What if a house was designed from scratch with energy saving priciples at its very core, using the most sophisticated modern building techniques the 1980s have to offer? That is exactly the goal of the Futurehome 2000 project - to make an energy efficient house that will be fit for the year 2000.
Futurehome 2000 is being built by Super Homes, under the auspices of The Money Programme. It will be part of the Milton Keynes Development Corporation’s Home World ’81 exhibition, one of 36 show homes being designed and built by 22 companies from aall over the world, on the theme of energy conservation.
This compilation of clips follows the design and construction of the Futurehome, examining its timbre frame, insullation, its use of natural light and solar panels, low energy boilers, the TOTEM microcogenerator, and innovative computer-controlled heating system. Once completed, The Money Programme reporter Nick Clarke and his young family will be moving in to Futurehome 2000, to get a taste of what it might be like to live in a 21st century family home.
