Philip Tibenham takes a coach tour around the County Durham town of Spennymoor, organised by local entrepreneur, John Wray. Mr Wray has ambitious plans to turn the town into a prime package holiday destination for Spanish tourists.
Attractions will include the allotments, the coalmine, the new housing estates, and a slap-up showcase of local cuisine - from stottie cakes and leek pudding to tripe and onions. Guests will be put up at the North Eastern Hotel - which unfortunately was built in anticipation of a railway station that never materialised.
Mr Wray reckons that the rugged industrial charm exuded by Spennymoor is precisely the side of Britain that Spanish tourists want to see.
