Violent Protests In Kazakhstan
Violent protests have broken out across Kazakhstan after the government lifted a price cap on liquefied natural gas. A lot of people in Kazakhistan converted their cars so that they could be fueled by liquefied natural gas because the cost of oil there is so high. And then because the government lifted this price cap, the cost of liquefied natural gas doubled basically overnight. So people hit the streets to protest this but then really quickly those protests expanded and turned violent. You had a mix of genuinely concerned citizens but also hooligans taking advantage of the situation and doing things like torching government buildings and looting. While the protests started about gas prices, they also ended up being against Kazakhstan's former president, who's basically a dinosaur from the Soviet era, who still maintains some power and is super corrupt. So the government's cabinet resigns and now troops from Russia and the alliance of former Soviet countries are on their way to Kazakhistan at the President's request to calm things down. Now Russia was happy to step in, but not before pointing the finger at the United States for instigating these protests.
Trump Endorsed Hungarian Prime Minister?
Former President Trump has endorsed Hungary's far-right Prime Minister Viktor Orban in the run up to parliamentary elections there. It isn't common for former US presidents to endorse foreign candidates but it does happen. After Viktor Orban became prime minister, he adopted a new constitution and a new media law that trampled on democratic freedoms. He curbed and controlled the press, overthrew the country's justice system, and removed the head of the Supreme Court. That’s not all, nonprofits were undermined and election laws were changed to favor his party. And leaders in the EU, which Hungary is a member of, have said Hungary's government poses real threats to human rights and the rule of law. And now they're trying to find a way to punish Orban for his corruption. Fox News's Tucker Carlson traveled to Hungary to interview Orban and said that Hungary is a place with a lot of lessons for the rest of us. Now the American Conservative Union is promoting a possible event in Hungary later this year. Trump says he endorsed Orban because he stopped illegal immigration in Hungary and created jobs and trade. Also, Orban endorsed Trump.
