Spotify's Culture Next 2021 report explains how Olivia Rodrigo's fan base grew. 34 percent discovered her music on social media, 12 percent through a friend's recommendation, 11 percent through an app, and 6 percent through the radio.
Social media also has an impact on musicians' songwriting. A 16-year-old hyper pop-style musician named Glaive said, “growing up on the internet and seeing social media has influenced my music a lot. Up to this day, you could see a phrase on something on social media and be like, oh, that'd be cool to put in a song.’”
Not only is Gen Z getting inspired musically by artists from social media, but they're also driving inspiration within artists.
