12:05Now PlayingIn Anglo-Saxon England, warfare was based around the use of heavy infantrymen in large, solid shield-wall formations. If they held steady, a block of infantry arrayed in such a way could easily deter assault by even the heaviest of armoured cavalry as well as enemy infantry. If the wall should break, however, it could spell doom for the army.
Here we have footage of some reenactors practicing and preparing for the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings. They engage in both individual sparring and large formation fighting, providing an excellent and up-close view of their techniques and strategies. -
