0:42Now PlayingPresident Trump on Monday defended his decision to lift sanctions on Iranian oil, saying he wanted to have "as much oil in the system as possible" despite the apparent $14 billion windfall it could provide to the Iranian regime.
"I just want to have as much oil in the system as possible, and we don’t even know if Iran gets that money," he told reporters before boarding Air Force One in Palm Beach, Florida. "You have ships that are out there loaded up with oil. Rather than keep it there, I would rather see it go to the system."
President Trump — who has previously criticized former President Obama for unfreezing Iranian assets as part of the 2015 nuclear deal — brushed aside concerns about lifting oil sanctions.
"Any small amount of money that Iran gets is not going to have any difference in this war, but I want to have the system be lubricated," he said.
