“Howard Lutnick is a pathological liar who is enabling the most egregious cover-up in American history,” she told reporters after pressing him during a closed-door transcribed interview with the House Oversight Committee.
The Arizona Democrat said there were major discrepancies between how the Commerce secretary previously said he had vowed in 2005 to end any relationship with Mr. Epstein and the version of the story presented in the Epstein files.
“He said that he would never socially or professionally be involved or be in a room with Jeffrey Epstein again,” Rep. Ansari said. “Then in 2012, he took his family and his staff to Jeffrey Epstein’s island.”
Rep. Ansari said she had focused her questioning on how such a visit could be possible if Mr. Lutnick had cut off all ties with the disgraced financier in 2005, as he previously claimed.
“In 2008, we know that Jeffrey Epstein was accused — and a sweetheart deal took place — for soliciting a minor,” she said. “Howard Lutnick tried to tell us in that room, essentially, didn’t know any of that.”
