as posted by the channelHouse Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-KY) told reporters he was waiting until after Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick's closed-door interview to determine whether his credibility had been damaged by documents in the Epstein files revealing he had met with the late sex offender on his infamous island, years after he said he had cut off contact.
"We'll let the American people judge if the credibility was damaged," Rep. Comer said Wednesday morning ahead of Secretary Lutnick's interview.
The Commerce secretary said in an interview late last year that he had sworn off contact with Mr. Epstein, his one-time neighbor, in 2005 after he witnessed "disgusting" behavior. Yet emails released in January from the Epstein files showed Secretary Lutnick and his family visited the late sex offender's island in 2012 and had extensive contact throughout the 2010s.
Since the release of the emails, lawmakers including Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) and many Democrats, including Sen. Adam Schiff (CA), have called for Secretary Lutnick's resignation.
"He wasn't 100% truthful with whether or not he had been on the island," Rep. Comer said.
