The Trump–Putin meeting in Alaska is only hours away, with key discussions possibly starting this afternoon around 3:30 PM EST and a possible joint press conference around 7 PM. Trump views the event as historic and likely wants a tangible result—possibly an air ceasefire—to enhance its significance and avoid looking like he failed to reach common ground. Both leaders have incentives to reach some agreement: Trump for political and image reasons, and Putin because continued Western military aid to Ukraine makes a decisive victory harder.
Trump has signaled he’s motivated by ending the killing and has criticized his predecessor for prolonging the war. He acknowledges any deal would require Ukrainian and European agreement. Putin’s stated conditions remain unchanged: no NATO membership for Ukraine, protections for ethnic Russians, military neutrality, and Ukrainian withdrawal from occupied territories’ administrative borders. A limited aerial ceasefire seems the most attainable first step, though deeper territorial issues remain contentious.
Trump said territorial swaps could be discussed but insisted Ukraine must decide. He rejected the idea that Putin seeks all of Ukraine, though he criticized Russia’s ongoing airstrikes as counterproductive. Meanwhile, both Russia and Ukraine continue long-range strikes on each other’s territory.
