Donald Trump said he hasn’t yet decided whether to send Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine, possibly through NATO. Russia warned that such a move would end any remaining diplomatic relations, since Tomahawks—with ranges up to 1,500 miles—could reach Moscow.

Retired Lt. Col. Daniel Davis explained that unlike F-16s or HIMARS, Tomahawks can’t simply be handed over to Ukraine; they require U.S. military platforms—strategic bombers, submarines, or launch silos—meaning only American personnel could operate them. That would constitute a direct U.S. attack on Russia, making this a far more serious escalation.

Davis argued the missiles wouldn’t change the course of the war but would dramatically raise the risk of confrontation. While Russia has so far responded with restraint to Western actions that might be considered acts of war, there is always a potential “red line” that could trigger retaliation—possibly indirect strikes on U.S. interests elsewhere rather than open war.

He concluded that sending Tomahawks would be a pointless and dangerous provocation: it wouldn’t help Ukraine win, could expose Americans to new risks, and would deplete limited U.S. stockpiles needed for a future conflict with Russia or China.
