Today we're talking the Dr. Disrespect ban from E3 and Twitch. Recently, Guy "Dr. Disrespect" Beahm was banned from E3 and Twitch. Dr. Disrespect walked into a bathroom four times while filming with a cameraman at E3, in what looked like a publicity stunt. As a result he was banned from Twitch and E3 for an undetermined amount of time.
The ban itself is pretty obviously justified. There wouldn't be much in a video if that was all we had to talk about. The bigger issue with Dr. Disrespect's ban is the larger implication it has on the gaming industry. People heavily underestimate how much brands pay attention to stuff like this. This is less of a problem when gaming news covers it. The Dr. Disrespect ban was featured on CNN though, meaning it reached an audience that typically isn't exposed to that kind of content. This effects brand trust negatively. We don't want to be the site that non-gamers think of as "the site where people walk into bathrooms."
If there's one thing I want as a takeaway from this video, it's that brand trust matters a lot. It's easy to think "oh who cares" about this - but as soon as this gets in front of marketing directors and budget controllers they will pull sponsorships from the gaming industry over the long term if brand trust erodes and there isn't a fit with their message and ours in the industry.
To prevent this, we need more professionalism and accountability around issues when they pop up like this. I'm not sure we'll get it, but Dr. Disrespect's ban once again exemplifies the necessity of it.
