Should you put palatal expanders on your kids?

Putting expanders in a 5 or 7 year old sounds extreme… until you understand what is actually being treated.

Early expansion is not about teeth. It is about guiding growth while the face and airway are still developing.

In early childhood, the bones of the upper jaw are still flexible. That creates a window where changes can influence how a child breathes, how their airway forms, and how their facial structure develops over time. Once that window begins to close, the approach often shifts toward working within existing limitations instead of shaping them.

This is why timing becomes such a critical factor. Intervening during growth allows you to support structure and function together, rather than trying to correct alignment after the fact.

When the foundation develops with enough space, everything built on top of it tends to function more efficiently.
