Crowded teeth in kids are usually a sign that the conversation needs to start earlier and go deeper.

When there is not enough room for adult teeth to come in, the issue is often related to how the jaws developed. The teeth are showing you the space problem, but the structure underneath is what needs to be evaluated.

This matters because jaw development is connected to more than alignment. A narrow upper jaw can affect tongue posture, nasal breathing, sleep quality, and airway function. If a child is snoring, mouth breathing, sleeping restlessly, or showing signs of crowding early, those are patterns worth investigating before jumping straight to braces.

Braces can move teeth, and sometimes they are absolutely needed. But if the jaw is too small or the airway is compromised, straightening the teeth alone may not address the reason the crowding happened in the first place.

That is why I want parents to ask different questions.

Is there enough space for the tongue?

Is my child breathing through their nose?

Is the palate narrow?

Was a tongue tie missed?

Is oral motor function being evaluated?

Would expansion be more appropriate before braces?

The goal is not just a straight smile. The goal is healthy growth, better function, and a foundation that supports breathing, sleep, and long-term stability.

If your child has crowding, mouth breathing, snoring, or restless sleep, it is worth finding a provider trained in airway-focused orthodontics and functional dentistry.
