A handful of studies have searched for a connection between ADHD and development of dementia later in life. While some have found an increased likelihood of dementia among those with ADHD, others failed to find a connection. Correcting for depression, anxiety, and diabetes seem to weaken any ADHD-dementia connection.
One recent study garnered much attention, but it’s claim that dementia was almost three times more common among those with ADHD has questionable relevance. The researchers eliminated everybody with childhood onset ADHD from their analysis.
Lewy Body dementia appears to have a stronger neuropathological connection to ADHD than do the considerably more common Alzheimer’s or vascular dementias.
Regardless of whether ADHD leads to dementia, ADHD late in life is often confused with dementia. ADHD in older adults remains significantly under-detected, in part because these individuals grew up in a time when even childhood ADHD was widely unrecognized. There is considerable overlap in the executive function deficits characterizing ADHD and dementia.
