The coronavirus pandemic has created many new challenges to people traveling abroad and left thousands of Americans stranded in countries where the borders are closed, or international flights have been canceled.

Sandra McLemore, a travel industry expert, says those who are still able to get home should do so as soon as possible.

“You need to be prepared to get yourself home, or at least take the advice that the government has to give you if something was to happen while you’re traveling,” she says, recommending that the first thing anyone who isn’t able to find a flight should do, is to contact the nearest American Embassy or Consulate for help.

“They’ll be able to update you on any evacuation plans and the options that are available to you.”

Additionally, she says, “Seek shelter in place, stay safe, follow the local laws and regulations. The last thing you want is to find yourself on the wrong side of the virus – and the wrong side of the law.”
