José Luis Granados Ceja explains that Honduras is now wide open for a major comeback of the ZEDEs — private, foreign-run “crypto zones” created under former president Juan Orlando Hernández. These zones allow outside investors to run pieces of Honduran territory with their own rules, courts, and regulations. As José puts it, their promoters act like “filibusters,” echoing 19th-century Americans who came to Central America and tried to govern land as their own.
Libre repealed the ZEDE law, but Honduras’ courts protected Próspera — the main crypto zone — so it never shut down. With either the Liberal or National Party now likely to govern, José says the crypto groups “will strengthen internally” and expect expansion, because both parties are friendlier to outside investors than Libre was.
He adds that the push for ZEDEs “comes with violence,” because these zones require force to secure land and keep locals out. And with Libre out of power, social movements lose even the small amount of state protection they once had.
José’s bottom line: this election sets the stage for a renewed fight over Honduran territory and sovereignty, and grassroots groups must figure out how to “resist the coming onslaught.”
