7:38Now PlayingJeremy Scahill joined the Drop Site News livestream today to break down his latest report, “Trump, Gaza, and Oslo Déjà Vu,” co-authored with Jawa Ahmad.
He described how he personally met with a wide spectrum of Palestinian factions –from Hamas to secular leftist groups – who now share a unified position toward Trump’s Gaza plan. He highlighted the 2024 Beijing Declaration, where 14 factions agreed to reform the PLO and move beyond Oslo.
Scahill also revealed that Abbas issued an edict in November that effectively excludes the most popular Palestinian factions from running for office, since it requires candidates to endorse past PLO agreements – including the renunciation of armed resistance.
The law requires every party and candidate to “commit to the PLO’s program” — recognition of Israel, acceptance of Oslo, and renunciation of armed resistance. This condition automatically disqualifies Hamas, PIJ, and could impact other parties as well. Senior PA officials admit the law was drafted to align with Trump’s Gaza plan and the new UN Security Council resolution demanding Palestinian “reform,” creating a filter for compliant leadership.
Recent polling from the independent PCPSR shows Palestinians overwhelmingly reject the move. Abbas, last elected in 2005 to a four-year term, now polls near 13%, while Hamas remains the most popular party across Gaza and the West Bank. Coalitions of NGOs, women’s groups, and secular factions also warn the decree-law overrides the public will and buries the Beijing Declaration — last year’s 14-faction unity roadmap for a reformed, democratic PLO that could represent all Palestinians.
