10:59Now PlayingIn the church I grew up in, "Calvinism" was a bad word. My basic understanding of Calvinism was that it made God to be a moral monster, it made humans robots, and overall it was just bad and not to be messed with. That was more or less the extent of my interaction with Calvinism growing up, and even as I learned a little more, I always had a sense it should be kept at an arm's length. Then I went to Bible College. In Bible college (Moody Bible Institute) I started meeting Calvinists and realizing that for the most part, they're not crazy, believe in a loving God, and are generally nothing like what I was told to believe. The biggest challenge to my Arminianism and my childhood views of Calvinism was actually reading Calvin's Institutes for myself. In this video, my goal is not to debate Calvinism vs Arminianism (I know, some of you might be disappointed now, but if you've read the description this far, the least you can do is watch the video). Rather, my goal is to promote honest conversation between Arminians and Calvinists. No matter which side of the debate you fall on, I think we can all learn from the other side, and hopefully in so doing realize that this really isn't about sides. We're all on the same team, disagreements and all. My challenge to you is twofold: first, be more faithful to Scripture than your theological system and second, engage with the other side at the source. If you're a Calvinist, read Wesley and Arminius. If you're an Arminian, read Calvin. There's a lot to be learned from both Calvinists and Arminians, if we're humble enough to learn.
