14:30Now PlayingBefore the Russian Empire there was the Tsardom of Russia. Over the course of the 17th century it expanded futher east. The Russians even colonized the Americas. Russian Alaska was eventually sold to the United States. Russia's imperial ambitions made them conquer the Causasus and Central Asia.
Early 20th century the Russians lost a war against Japan (Russo-Japanese War) which culminated into the Russian Revolution of 1905. The First World War was a disaster for Russia. Millions of Russian soldiers died during World War One. In 1917 the Russian Revolution took place. There was a revolution in February and in October the bolsheviks seized power they also wanted to take control of Ukraine. The fighting that followed is known as the Russian Civil War. After the Reds emerged victorious against the White Russian Armies the Soviet Union was established. After 1927 Stalin seized power. His reign costed millions of lives. People perished in famines and concentration camps (Gulag). Many were executed by his secret service during the Great Purge.
In 1939 the German invasion of Poland took place. A few weeks later the Soviets marched in from the east. Later the Germans attacked the Soviet Union. After WW II many central and eastern European countries came under the soviet sphere of influence. Flashforward to 1991. The dissolution of the Soviet Union made many nations independent. Russia became now known as the Russian Federation. In Central Asia and the Caucasus several wars broke out. Chechnya proclaimed itself independent as the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria which led to the First and Second Chechen War. In 2014 Russia annexed Crimea and Russian backed troops fought in Eastern Ukraine during the Donbass War that is still going on today.
