as posted by the channelHave you ever wondered how the Cold War started? Who started the Cold War? To determine how the Cold War kicked off we need to go back to 1917. The Russian Revolution and the Russian Civil War transformed the Russian Empire into the Soviet Union. An allied intervention was sent to subdue the bolsheviks and fight along side the White Russian Armies. Yet, the did not defeat the Red Army and thus Russia was now a communist state. In the US it created the First Red Scare.
The western mistrust against the Soviet Union was seen at the Conference of Munich in 1938. It brought Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union closer together and they signed a non aggression treaty in august 1939: the Molotov Ribbentrop Pact. When Nazi Germany invaded Poland the following month the Second World War started. The Soviet Union was not a direct ally of Nazi Germany but did took part in the joined invasion of Poland. Also it traded with the nazis. But then on 22nd June 1941 Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union during Operation Barbarossa.
The Soviet Union, Great Britain and United States became forced allies. During the Conference of Tehran (1943), Conference of Yalta and the Conference of Potsdam (1945) they came together how to establish a peaceful postwar Europe. After WWII Churchill wanted to launch Operation Unthinkable. To find out what the idea was behind the operation check out this video about the origins of the Cold War. Could the Cold War have been prevented?
