8:34Now PlayingThe assassination of Reinhard Heydrich, also known as Operation Anthropoid, was a World War II covert operation carried out by Czechoslovakian resistance fighters in Prague on May 27, 1942. Heydrich was a high-ranking official of the Third Reich. The operation was planned and executed by two Czechoslovakian soldiers, Jan Kubiš and Jozef Gabčík, who were trained by the British Special Operations Executive (SOE) in the UK. They parachuted into Czechoslovakia with four other soldiers in December 1941 to carry out the mission. On May 27, 1942, Heydrich was travelling in an open-topped car when Kubiš and Gabčík ambushed him at a hairpin turn in the road. Kubiš threw an anti-tank grenade at the car, severely injuring Heydrich. Despite being wounded, Heydrich managed to fire his pistol at the attackers before the car crashed. He was taken to a hospital, where he died of his injuries on June 4, 1942. After the assassination, the Nazis launched a brutal crackdown on Czechoslovakia, killing hundreds of civilians and destroying the village of Lidice. Kubiš, Gabčík, and their four fellow soldiers were eventually tracked down and killed by the Nazis in a church in Prague.
