1:00Now PlayingPrior to WW2 the South American nation of Paraguay had a large German population. Over a million and a half German colonist and their descendants lived in Latin America by the mid-1930s. Out of million people 26,000 Germans lived in Paraguay. The German settlers maintained close ties to Germany. Many of these immigrants, together with diplomats and spies participated in activities for the Third Reich. Even before the Nazis came to power Hitler sent agents to the region to influence the Germans in Paraguay. In 1931 the first Latin American Nazi Party was established in Paraguay. Soon Nazi symbols were displayed on German and even Paraguayan establishments. Many government members actively supported the Nazis. Paraguay’s national police chief named his son Adolfo Hirohito, in honor of the two Axis leaders. War-time president Higinio Moríñigo had pro-Fascist sentiments. Yet, when WW2 broke out Paraguay was cut off from Germany. Thanks to US economic aid Paraguay came into the US orbit and the Paraguayan government cracked down on pro-Nazi sentiments.
