The Nazis of Neutral Sweden – Inside Sweden’s Forgotten Extremists Movements

The Svenska nationalsocialistiska partiet (SNSP) was one of several Nazi-inspired movements that emerged in Sweden during the 1930s. Founded in 1930, it was heavily influenced by the ideology and methods of Germany. The party aimed to reshape Swedish society along authoritarian and racially defined lines, advocating for a “pure” Nordic state. The SNSP gained some attention during the early 1930s, particularly amid economic hardship and political uncertainty caused by the Great Depression. It organized rallies, published propaganda, and even adopted uniforms and symbols similar to their German counterparts. However, internal divisions and competition from other far-right groups limited its growth. Unlike in Germany, this extreme ideology never gained mass support in Sweden. The country’s democratic institutions remained strong, and most Swedes rejected extremist politics. By the late 1930s and especially during World War II, public opinion turned further against such movements. Ultimately, the SNSP faded into political irrelevance. While small in size, it remains an important example of how the extremist ideology spread beyond Germany—even into countries often seen as neutral or stable.
