8:36Now PlayingThe Siege of Madrid was a central, three-year struggle during the Spanish Civil War. After the 1936 coup, Nationalist forces expected a quick victory, but Madrid remained loyal to the Republic, famously adopting the slogan "¡No pasarán!" (They shall not pass). The city endured relentless aerial bombardments and a brutal "war of attrition" that caused widespread starvation. Major battles at the University City, Jarama, and Brunete resulted in a bloody stalemate. The siege only ended in March 1939, following internal Republican infighting and a coup by Colonel Segismundo Casado, which allowed Franco’s troops to enter the capital and claim final victory.
