8:37Now PlayingWorld News: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre delivered a strong message to US President Donald Trump regarding Greenland’s sovereignty, warning that any attempt to take territory from another country would be unacceptable under international law.
Speaking during a joint press conference in Bardufoss, Norway, on Friday, after observing NATO military exercises alongside German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, the leaders addressed questions about tensions involving the United States and Greenland.
When asked whether the dispute between the U.S. and Greenland had been settled, Carney said he was “fully prepared — individually and collectively” to defend the Arctic against any threats. He also made clear that he fully shares Norway’s position that Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark and that its future must be decided by the people of Greenland and Denmark.
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre echoed that stance, emphasizing the importance of respecting sovereignty and international law. “Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, and it’s up to the people in Greenland and in the Kingdom of Denmark to trace the future for the people in Greenland,” Støre said. He added a firm warning about territorial claims:
“Any attempt to say that a country can take land from another country is unacceptable. It’s not acceptable to international law.”
The remarks highlight growing international attention on the strategic importance of the Arctic and the need to uphold sovereignty, alliances, and international rules in the region.
Watch the full briefing as Mark Carney and Norway’s prime minister respond to questions about Greenland, Arctic security, and global tensions.
