Speaking to reporters on Friday in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, Vance was pressed about what advice he gave the president during the high-level deliberations. However, the vice president made clear he would not disclose what was said inside the White House Situation Room.
“I hate to disappoint you, but I’m not going to show up here and in front of God and everybody else [and] tell you exactly what I said in that classified room,” Vance told reporters. He added that the discussions must remain confidential to protect national security and the integrity of presidential decision-making. “Partially because I don’t want to go to prison, and partially because I think it’s important for the president of the United States to be able to talk to those advisers without those advisers running their mouth to the American media,” Vance said.
The comments come as scrutiny grows over the Trump administration’s military actions against Iran, with reporters seeking more clarity about the decision-making process behind the strikes.
